Carnival

I can’t say I know anything about poetry other than I know when one speaks to me and when one seems like a bunch of words thrown together. The following lyrics—which is a form of poetry, right?—Are from a song that I haven’t heard in a long time.

I guess I should set this up a little bit. I took Serica—my awesome cat—for a ride today through the country and while she was hanging her head out the window (I swear she’s part dog) I decided to turn on the radio and this song had just started. One of my first concerts was 10,000 Maniacs and ever since I listened to Natalie M. when she came out with a new album. She has an incredible way of choosing words to express herself. To me, I think there’s a novel waiting to be written from the lyrics of this song—they say so much in such little time. I hope you enjoy them as much as I do.

The video of this song follows the lyrics: If you wish to hear the melody along with the words.

Write Fearlessly

NATALIE MERCHANT

‘Carnival’

I’ve walked these streets
A virtual stage
It seemed to me
Make up on their faces
Actors took their
Places next to me
I’ve walked these streets
In a carnival
Of sights to see
All the cheap thrill seekers
The vendors & the dealers
They crowded around me
Have I been blind
Have I been lost
Inside myself and
My own mind
Hypnotized
Mesmerized
By what my eyes have seen?
I’ve walked these streets
In a spectacle of wealth & poverty
In the diamond market
The scarlet welcome carpet
That they just rolled out for me
I’ve walked these streets
In the mad house asylum
They can be
Where a wild eyed misfit prophet
On a traffic island stopped
And he raved of saving me
Have I been blind
Have I been lost
Inside myself and
My own mind
Hypnotized
Mesmerized
By what my eyes have seen?
Have I been wrong
Have I been wise
To shut my eyes
And play along
Hypnotized
Paralyzed
By what my eyes have found
By what my eyes have seen
What they have seen?
Have I been blind
Have I been lost
Have I been wrong
Have I been wise
Have I been strong
Have I been
Hypnotized
Mesmerized
By what my eyes have found
In that great street carnival
In that carnival?
