FREE Outlining Software

I think I’ve mentioned yWriter5 before in an earlier post but it has been so helpful I thought I would talk about it once again. In the short time I’ve been writing fiction my writing process has changed drastically. I have gone from having an idea, coming up with a title, a beginning, an end, and then just jumping in with both feet to the actual writing. This approach worked ok for Flash Fiction and somewhat ok for short stories. However, when I started my novel, this approach fell flat on its face. There was simply too much space and time to cover in a novel without having some sort of preplanning. Then I stumbled upon KM Weiland’s web-site ‘Wordplay’ and ended up buying her invaluable book ‘Outlining Your Novel’ that changed my writing process completely and forever, for the better. Now I create an outline for every story I write, and it has greatly improved (I think) my confidence, my creativity, and most importantly my stories. All that just from building an outline: who would have guessed? So, after finishing her book I went over to Amazon (I’m an Amazon junkie) to checkout writing software. Here’s what I came across: 1) Scrivener $40 2) Final Draft $170 3) WriteItNow $70 4) Power Structure $50 5) StoryView $150—-and on and on. I’m sure these are all great, but luckily, in ‘Outlining Your Novel’ yWriter5 is mentioned and suggests it for one it’s a good program, and two, it is FREE. That’s right free. Of course it might not have all the bells and whistles that some of those other programs have, but it has what you need to get your ideas down and in order. Here are some screen shots to give you an idea of what you are getting when you download this program.

That should give you an idea of what you can do with this software. Believe me, if you currently do not outline your stories then you should start today. And, when you do, download this program ( ) or you can go out and spend $$$ on another one—I didn’t want to drop $50-$150 on a program that I wasn’t sure I was even going to use or understand. This is a great program, you really should check it out for youself. Let me know if you like it as much as I do.
